As a hospitalist group, we use our fair share of hand sanitizers day in/day out taking care of COVID-19 patients as well as non-COVID patients.I was looking for a good substitute for the usual gel and spray type of sanitizer products and was hoping to have a product that can perform equally well compared to the usual brand of foaming sanitizer stocked at the hospitals where we work, mainly the Ecolab brand foaming hand sanitizer. The type of foam that can be produced is a satisfying thin, foamy consistency, not thick foam by any stretch, but serviceable without a second thought and without dripping everywhere (and wasted) when pumped into the hand. That is what the Ecolab type of foaming sanitizer can do.Let's review this particular product and I will address a lot of the concerns raised by others.1 - The foaming actionThis is the most important aspect of why this product was chosen by our group. We don't expect a rich lather and even a thin foam would suffice, enough to stay put on the palm when dispensed. Unfortunately, this product is so thin, it is a drippy pool of liquid with a some scant bubbles interspersed within. In other words, when dispensed it will slosh around the palm and likely drip without taking extra care. The minimum percentage of alcohol is recommended to be 60% and most of the commercially available foaming products are at the 60-62% concentration. This is a key factor in being able to produce adequate foam, by having sufficient foaming agents mixed in. A 70% product (such as this) while meeting and exceeding the sanitizing threshold for alcohol content, sacrifices foaming action as a consequence. I could buy any product out there that is not specifically marketed as a foaming sanitizer if I was looking for a non-foaming product. A shame. Misleading. Rating: 1/5 stars.2 - ScentThis is an ethanol-based sanitizer and there are traces of aldehydes, ketones, and sulfurs in the various production methods that will give an off-putting odor, and various commercially produced sanitation products will have additives that can neutralize or mask some or most of the undesirable odors. This particular product does not seem to even pretend to do this in any discernible way. You will smell the ethanol in all of its fermented glory. Having said that, it is not atrocious as most would seem to make you believe. In fact, having used dozens of sanitizing products, this one is far from the worst. There is a distinct citrus-like lingering odor after the ethanol evaporates, but the funky ethanol scent remains to a very small degree as well. Get used to the funk, a LOT of products have it. Rating: 3/5 stars.3 - Sanitizing and MoisturizingThis product definitely sanitizes given the 70% alcohol content. No problems here. They do market it as appropriate for repeated use, and after giving it a decent run for its money, I can say that my hands do not feel particularly dry. There are products out there that lack in this department, but glad to say, my hands are adequately moisturized after repeatedly using this product, sometimes in far excess of what is required to do a quick clean. Rating 5/5 stars.Overall: This is a 3/5 star product that would be a 4/5 star product if it contained less alcohol and more foaming agents (to the tune of a 62% alcohol product). It works, no, don't expect much foaming, and it does not smell as bad as people make it out to be. Alternatively, just stop pretending to market this to be a foaming product and that will solve the majority of the problems that people such as I will have of this product. Unfortunately, if this company drops the foaming moniker, it will be lost in a sea of mediocre, generic sanitizing products that are starting to flood the market.TL;DR: It doesn't foam much. Pretend it's not. Pass if you want decent (even minimal) foaming. It's no better/worse than most NON-foaming hand sanitizers and smells okay. If foam doesn't matter to you, this product might work.Got a gallon of the unscented for less than $10. While it does have an unpleasant smell, to us it is fairly faint. While I wouldn't repurchase, we will use it all. It is also NOT moisturizing but had no added ingredients to do so, but I knew that when I ordered it. In summary, it's not pleasantly scented (but is faint), not moisturizing but a good value... IF you can overlook it's issues. We didn't expect more though for $10 a gallon!I’d read the reviews about the scent. It’s even worse than I thought. Luckily, it doesn’t last very long. Calling it ‘unscented,’ is a lie. I’d recommend only using in a well ventilated room. It does the trick though. This product works but the smell was very offensive to me. I eventually just ordered something else that I know won't me gag when I am using it.Give 3 stars because the price, but the smell is just too strong!!Good productOrdered this in place of the usual sanitizer that I buy, which was out of stock. Since the description indicates that it's unscented, I expected it to just smell like alcohol. Well, it has an awful and very strong odor. It also foams slightly when you rub it in your hands. As much as I would like to get used to the smell, I just haven't been able to, so I've used it very little. I'm hoping I can find some type of scented liquid add-on like an orange or lavender scent, so I can use it more. I definitely won't be buying this product again. The unscented one has a bad smell.
