Description

Life is messy. Kat Greene lives in New York City and attends fifth grade in the very progressive Village Humanity School. At the moment she has three major problems—dealing with her boy-crazy best friend, partnering with the overzealous Sam in the class production of Harriet the Spy, and coping with her mother's preoccupation with cleanliness, a symptom of her worsening obsessive-compulsive disorder. With nowhere to turn, Kat reaches out to the free-spirited psychologist, Olympia, at her new-age private school in New York’s Greenwich Village. Olympia encourages Kat to be honest. Eventually, Kat realizes that sometimes asking for help is the best way to clean up life’s messes.

Kat in Kat Greene Comes Clean by Melissa Roske quickly learns that life isn’t perfect—and that imperfection starts at home. Kat is dealing with her mom’s OCD and all its indignities. Then there’s the layer of divorce in her home thickening her instability. If she could rely on her best friend, Halle, things would be better, but Halle’s concerns orbit soley around a boy in class, Michael. Wisely, she reaches out to the school counselor of our dreams, Olympia. However, throughout the bumpiness and daily crushes of tweendom, (while holding on to her literary crush, Harriet the Spy) and the dilemmas of living with mental illness, Kat consistently roots for her mom. And that is one of the endearing things about this character. She can rise above her own issues. One keeps envisioning solutions for her—and turning the pages. Kat Greene is that human, that likeable, and ultimately, that strong. One can’t ignore the other attributes of this necessary middle grade novel: simply the charm of the resourceful Kat, an authentic New York City with all its nuances, and, how Kat can teach us that whatever issues you are dealing with, it’s probably more normal than you think—and good help is out there.Melissa Roske and her novel Kat Greene Come Clean have been chosen to participate in Page Turners, a non-profit program that brings authors into our inner city schools to teach writing under the Archdiocese of New York. Thank you, Melissa, for your generosity, and for authoring this exceptional middle grade book that reveals a much needed vision of humanity. Please don’t let us wait too long for the next Melissa Roske novel.
