I’ve been using silicone trivets for years, but mine are the same size as potholders (and double as such). For certain things, that potholder size is just not big enough. I end up having to double them up or spread several out across the table. (See photo of these 4 trivets, and then a separate photo of this trivet next to my potholder-sized trivet for comparison.) These trivets are really mats – and are meant for one purpose only: to quickly and easily protect your counters and tabletops from hot, cold, or even messy dishes. And they work great!We use a large cast iron pan in which to bake our pizzas. But I’ve been too leery to bring that heavy, 450-degree, sizzling iron pan to the table with the trivets I have, and it’s too hot to hold while cutting a slice if placed on a glass or wooden cutting board that doesn’t securely grip the pan. These trivet mats are the PERFECT solution (see photo). They’re thick and durable, and fully grip the hot, cast iron pan. Now our pizza stays nice and warmed from below right on our table as we eat, and no one has to touch the pan to get another slice. This trivet mat is also what I needed to feel comfortable bringing my heavy (17-pound) Dutch oven right to the table from the hot oven (see photo).But these trivet mats are great for other purposes too. They are nicely lined all around with grooves that will trap liquids and keep them off your table. This can include condensation from cold dishes (like potato salad placed in an ice bath), drippings and spills from casseroles, even seeping grease from an overfilled lasagna pan. A quick wash with dish detergent and they are clean as a whistle. Think even beyond food: if you’re doing any household project with something hot (e.g., glue gun, iron, heat gun, butane torch, etc.), this mat will give you a safe place to rest your tools without doing any damage to your table or counter.Bottom line: love ‘em!
