Description

Amazon.com Though Cold's music has become more melodic and accessible, that doesn't mean that they've turned over a new leaf. Scratch the surface and you'll find these Florida soreheads are still mad at the world, but happily able to channel that rage into compelling, brainy head-banging. In fact, it wouldn't be going too far to call them post-alt-metal Beck, what with their collage of disparate sounds and effects and their self-referential declarations, mimicking the diminutive singer's early outings: "I'm a loner / I'm a loser / I'm a winner in my own mind / I'm a bad one / I'm a good one / I'm a sick one with a smile." But they're not just a hardened bunch of nihilists. Their bleak worldview is rescued by a staunch sense of self and the quaint but sweet notion of the healing power of love. The affection of a good, but flawed woman is pervasive on the album's 13 tracks. With Scooter Ward's powerful vocals, inventive guitar interplay, and Sam McCandless' nonstop primal bashing, Cold, after 15 years together, are outshining mentors Limp Bizkit. --Jaan Uhelszki

This is a very good release from Cold,an amazing followup to 13 Ways to Bleed on Stage. Although this album seems to have eased up a tad on the hardcore screaming, but it isn't necessarily a bad thing. What they lack in ferocity they gained in progression, they seem to be tighter than ever here on Spider. With hardcore anthems like Stupid Girl,Don't Belong & Kill the Music Industry really shows they still pack their punch. More anthemic songs like Suffocate,Remedy,Whatever You Became,Sad Happy & The Day Seattle Died(a tribute to Layne Staley & Kurt Kobain) this album really has it all. There is excellent melody and Scooter's voice is top-notch,the guitars are beautiful and heavy all in one. The bass is nice and thick, plenty audible and chunky and the drums have excellent sound & the patterns are tight. Each song is excellent in it's own way,the album starts with Remedy which is an excellent song to kick off the album because it sets the pace for what's to come, the band really gets their groove here on Spider.Suffocate is very deep & catchy because their is so much emotion in the lyrics & in the delivery of the vocals.Cure my Tragedy is a sad depressing song with uplifting undertones, nice melody. Stupid Girl was the first single from the album and very catchy, almost anthemic in it's own way. Don't Belong hits home to me because it pretty much describes the lonliness that one can feel when being left by someone they trust, very deep song and very pretty. Wasted Years is another great song that has some great vocals and beautiful melody, smooth guitars and just all around awesome. Whatever you Became feels strong to me because it has, again personal feelings tied to the depth in the song & lyrics..it's a great song.Sad Happy & Rain Song are more emotionally driven and deep,as if Scooter really put all his emotions and feelings into the album as to the just straight up F**k You lyrics of previous albums(which are great by the way) but it seems like they have all reached a new emotional plateau so to speak. The Day Seattle Died is a respectful ode to grunge singers from Nirvana & Alice in Chains, very awesome song with lots of feeling. Change the World & Black Sunday are the peak of emotion when it comes to the lyrics, all really from the heart & that's why i really love the new direction(although all the albums are awesome) The album ends with the closest thing to the sound of 13 Ways to Bleed,Kill the Music Industry is a straighup middle finger to the record companies, the business deals in some dirty tactics but hey it's all good music. All in all this album is tight and has progressed emotionally and the musicianship has improved, the band sounds amazing & the direction is not a bad one. It is progression in it's purest form and on an emotional level,it raises the bar & would give Staind's Aaron Lewis a run for his money. This album is awesome and if you, like me got the special edition with the dvd then you'll get a look into the making of the album. In the studio footage, the making of Stupid Girl's video & the video itself, ontop of that you get a few live unplugged songs. All in all it is great buy,if your new to the band i suggest you start here & then get A Different Kind of Pain because it's a great followup to this album and it really is emotional and heartfeltd. This is a great album by a great band and it will hit your emotional side, the kind of album that gives you a shiver at almost every song.
