Description

Queen of the Clouds is the debut album from Tove Lo, out 9/30. The album is a unique love story divided into three parts: The Sex, The Love, and The Pain, staying true to the songwriter s honest, brazen storytelling that she began with her Truth Serum EP. Queen of the Clouds features three songs from the EP singles Habits (Stay High) and Not On Drugs, as well as the hugely popular Habits (Stay High) Hippie Sabotage remix.

Just as Broods and their debut album impressed on me, this first full-length album is surprisingly, consistently, tirelessly good. Not a comparison to Broods, stylistically, though. Tove is more like a cross between Robyn and Natasha Bedingfield. Catchy radio-worthy tracks; substantive, relatable lyrics. But she definitely has more of an edge than any of those forementioned. Interestingly, she's a Swede just as Robyn is.Two reasons I bought this album. Well, the main reason is I like showing my support of artists by actually paying for their music. But what stood out were how I never seem to tire of her break-out hit Habits, though it is seemed like the typical catchy tune that eventually turns annoying. Too real and personal, perhaps -- not that I would know if this sources from something real in her life. Second are the videos/interviews that reveal she's the real deal, stepping out of the shadows of writing for others, and stepping up and out alongside the rest of them. The edginess stems from her bringing sexuality into her music without it feeling gimmicky or put on for the sake of being provocative. Seeing her live performances reveals she just *is* sexy. And to see how she plays with the audience and camera so convincingly, I'm sold.My GunEpitomizes everything I like about this album/artist. Raw, simple lyrics, but suggestive of a complicated person behind them. Creatively mixed (love how she incorporates those sound effects so seamlessly). Super fun song. Best possible appetizer for what lies ahead.Of course the interludes... The actual first track demonstrates her unique way of thematically compartmentalizing her album into several "stages" of relationships -- for the ones of us who've experienced ones that begin and end, that is.Talking BodySexy, sexy, sexy track. Look online for any live performance of this one, and you'll throw in a fourth sexy in there. Not On DrugsHer album title's embedded in this one. On Spotify, we get a nice remix of it; typically, the most worthy songs get their encore with a remix or two and this is no exception.Got LoveLove the way the words of this one flow out of her. Love the flow of the track. Love the feel of it. Could only wish to have a real-life reason to relate with this material.Run On Love (Spotify for this one)Try not to notice how cute it is to hear an accent in the way she pronounces "while." Another super fun song.Thousand MilesAnother one that just feels good, despite being one of the forlorn tracks. These are just the tracks I can think of mentioning. I regularly listen to the album all the way through in my car on CD, and Spotify it at home or elsewhere. She was actually the reason I subscribed to a Spotify trial -- just had to be able to stream any one of those songs that might be in my head at any moment.
